Clean Eatz Kitchen vs Hungryroot: Heat-and-Eat Meals or a Grocery Box?

About this comparison: This comparison is published by Clean Eatz Kitchen, one of the two services compared. Prices and ordering terms come from each company's website; see How we compared them.

The verdict

Clean Eatz Kitchen wins for people who want dinner handled: chef-cooked meals from about $7.56 to $9.00 each, free shipping on every meal plan, no subscription, macros on every label and up to 12 months in the freezer. Hungryroot wins if you still want to cook and need groceries, with about 1,000 grocery items and 50,000+ recipes on a weekly subscription that charges when your shopping window closes.

These two services solve the same problem in opposite ways. Hungryroot is a grocery subscription. It fills a cart with groceries, recipes and a few prepared meals every week, and you cook most of it. We cook the meals, flash-freeze them, and you heat them in under 5 minutes.

So the real question is whether you want to cook this month. Here are the prices, shipping rules, subscription terms and nutrition details, side by side.

If you came here from a stack of hungryroot reviews, here is the short version. Hungryroot is a very good grocery box. It is not a heat-and-eat meal service, and its own pages call it a grocery subscription: you get groceries, recipes and some prepared meals, and you cook most of it.

Clean Eatz Kitchen is the opposite. Every meal arrives cooked, portioned and frozen, with the macros on the label. There is nothing to cook and nothing to cancel, because there is no subscription.

How we compared them

Clean Eatz Kitchen publishes this comparison of its own meals with Hungryroot. Prices, nutrition and ordering terms come from each company's website as of October 2026.

We did not run a taste test. We read the pages a new customer would read: hungryroot's FAQ, help center and homepage, and our own product and nutrition pages. Prices change, so check both sites before you buy.

  • Cost per meal, including shipping and bundle pricing
  • Plans, nutrition labels and how easy it is to hit a protein or calorie target
  • Ordering terms: subscription, skip and cancel rules
  • Prep time, food format and how long the food keeps

Side-by-side comparison

One is a meal service. The other is a grocery delivery service with recipes attached. That difference shows up in almost every row.

We gave Hungryroot the win where it earns it. Nobody beats a grocery box on variety and fresh produce.

Clean Eatz Kitchen

Best overall

We are a prepared meal delivery service. A chef cooks the meal, a registered dietitian builds the plan, and it ships frozen on dry ice in 2 to 3 business days. New to healthy meal delivery? Our Beginner's guide to healthy meal delivery explains the frozen format.

Nothing to cook, nothing to cancel, and the macros are already on the label.

Pros

  • No subscription. Order when you want meals and skip when you do not.
  • Free shipping on every meal plan, with no order threshold.
  • About $7.56 to $9.00 a meal on the Weight Loss plan, and up to 20% off when you order 30 meals.
  • Up to 12 months in the freezer, so a 30-meal order is not on a schedule.
  • Calories, protein, carbs, fat and allergens on every meal.
  • Goal plans: Weight Loss, High Protein, High Fiber, GLP-1 and Breakfast.

Cons

  • No groceries, produce or pantry staples.
  • Meals come in sets of 10 (6 on High Protein), so you need freezer space.
  • The High Protein and Breakfast plans include duplicate recipes.
  • If you love cooking from scratch, this is not that.
Build My Plan

Hungryroot

Best for groceries

Hungryroot calls itself a grocery subscription that plans your meals, builds your cart and delivers it based on your tastes. You take a quiz, it fills a weekly cart, and you edit it before the shopping window closes. Hungryroot meals are mostly recipes you cook, with ready-to-eat salads, grain bowls and 2-minute microwavables mixed in.

If you are reading up on hungryroot complaints, the terms worth knowing are on its own help center. The order auto-renews weekly and your card is charged when the window closes. After that, Hungryroot says the order can't be edited, though support may still help with a skip for a limited time.

Pros

  • One box covers groceries, recipes and some prepared meals, so it can replace a store run.
  • About 1,000 grocery items and 50,000+ recipes, tagged High Protein, Gluten-Free and more.
  • Its Root Standard rules out partially hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners, colors and preservatives.
  • Free shipping at $70, and the first delivery is guaranteed.
  • Skip, pause for up to 8 weeks, or cancel before the window closes.

Cons

  • Weekly subscription. The charge lands when the window closes, and changes stop there too.
  • Shipping is $6.99 on plans under $70.
  • You still cook most meals.
  • Refrigerated groceries are for that week. Extension charts give ground meat 1 to 2 days in the fridge.
  • No delivery to Hawaii, Alaska or P.O. boxes, and no free trial.

Category breakdown

Here is each category on its own, with a winner for each. We used the lowest prices each company lists, which favors Hungryroot, since its $8.99 dinner needs a bigger plan.

Three categories go to Clean Eatz Kitchen. One is a draw, because format is a matter of taste.

Hungryroot cost & value per meal

Winner: Clean Eatz Kitchen

The hungryroot cost question has two parts. Per serving, Hungryroot lists dinners as low as $8.99, lunches at $5.99 and breakfasts at $3.99. Those are the lowest prices, unlocked as your plan grows. Then shipping: $6.99 under $70, free at $70 or more.

Our Weight Loss plan is $89.95 for 10 meals, or $9.00 each, and $226.75 for 30, or about $7.56 each, shipped free. Those are complete cooked meals. To be fair, Hungryroot's breakfasts and lunches cost less than our breakfast items at $3.49 to $4.99, because you are buying groceries to assemble.

Plans & macros

Winner: Clean Eatz Kitchen

Hungryroot sorts its catalog with diet tags, including 42,000+ High Protein recipes and filters for Gluten-Free, Carb Conscious and 650 Calories Or Less, and it lists nutrition info for every recipe. What the pages we read do not list is a calorie or protein target per plan. You build the numbers yourself as you fill the cart.

Our plans are built around a number. The Weight Loss plan is calorie-controlled and macro-balanced. The High Protein plan adds 2 extra ounces of meat per meal, about 10 g more protein. The High Fiber plan has at least 5 g of fiber per meal. Whichever you pick, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is the free benchmark for a balanced plate, and a label with the macros on it makes that benchmark easier to hit.

Ordering flexibility & subscriptions

Winner: Clean Eatz Kitchen

Hungryroot is flexible for a subscription. You can skip, pause for up to 8 weeks, or cancel. The catch is the clock. Everything has to happen before your shopping window closes, and the card is charged when it does. Miss the window on a travel week and the box will likely ship anyway.

We do not have a window. There is no subscription, so there is no auto-renew, no cutoff and nothing to cancel. You order 10, 20 or 30 meals (6, 12 or 18 on High Protein) when the freezer runs low. We explained Why lock-in is the wrong default, and a weekly cycle is the exact case we had in mind.

Taste, prep time & format

Tie

This one is a draw. Hungryroot gives you fresh groceries, name brands you already buy, and 50,000+ recipes, with dinners it says are ready in minutes. If you like standing at the stove, no frozen tray replaces that.

Our meals are chef-cooked, flash-frozen, and heat in under 5 minutes. USDA says frozen food kept at 0 F stays safe indefinitely, and that freezer storage times are about quality. Our meals keep up to 12 months. Hungryroot's refrigerated items ship with ice packs for that week.

Quick cost example

Five dinners a week for one person. At Hungryroot's lowest listed dinner price, that is 5 x $8.99, or $44.95, plus $6.99 shipping under $70, so $51.94, or about $10.39 a dinner, and you still cook it. Five meals from our 30-meal Weight Loss plan cost about $37.80, shipped free, cooked and portioned. Over a month that is roughly $208 against $151.

Key takeaways

  • Is hungryroot worth it? Yes, if you want to cook and need groceries delivered. It is a grocery box, not a heat-and-eat meal service.
  • On price, we match or beat Hungryroot's best dinner price, and ours arrive cooked: about $7.56 to $9.00 a meal shipped free, against $8.99 at best plus $6.99 shipping under $70.
  • Hungryroot auto-renews weekly and charges when the window closes. We have no subscription at all.
  • Our meals keep up to 12 months frozen. Hungryroot's groceries are for the week they arrive.

Who should choose which

Pick the service that matches how much cooking you will actually do this month, not how much you hope to.

You can also run both. Keep 10 to 20 of our meals in the freezer for the nights that fall apart and cook the rest. Start with Build a meal plan and pick meals one by one.
