The verdict: Clean Eatz Protein PB&J gives you the most protein per calorie: 250 calories and 11 to 12g of protein, about 4.6g per 100 calories, on whole-grain bread. Jams is the best store-bought pick, with 10g of protein and only 4g of added sugar. Classic Uncrustables are the easiest to find but have 6g of protein and 8g of added sugar.
Peanut butter and jelly is having a high-protein moment. The childhood staple is now a frozen, grab-and-go snack for busy families, athletes, students and anyone who wants something quick that holds them until the next meal.
Not every protein PB&J is built the same. Some raise the protein number and keep the refined bread and added sugar. Others look past protein alone. Here is how three popular options compare: Clean Eatz Protein PB&J, Jams and Smucker's Uncrustables.
Who wins for most people
The biggest difference between these sandwiches isn't only how much protein they contain. It's what the rest of the sandwich is made from, and how many calories you pay for each gram of protein.
So we read past the front of the box. Calories, protein, added sugar and the bread itself decide this one.
For most people we'd pick the Clean Eatz Protein PB&J. It pairs 11 to 12g of protein with 250 calories, whole-grain bread, protein peanut butter and a low-sugar spread, and it's ready to eat with no heating or prep.
Jams is the best option you can buy in a store. It has 10g of protein, 4g of fiber and 4g of added sugar, the lowest added sugar any of these brands publishes. Classic Uncrustables are familiar and sold almost everywhere, but they are the weakest on nutrition, and the newer Uncrustables protein sandwiches buy their extra protein with 320 calories.
Published labels only
Clean Eatz Kitchen publishes this comparison of its own Protein PB&J with Jams and Smucker's Uncrustables. Nutrition and ingredients come from each company's website, checked on October 30, 2026. Labels change, so check the package before you buy.
We compared the Clean Eatz Grape and Honey flavors, Jams Strawberry, the classic Uncrustables Peanut Butter & Grape Jelly and the Uncrustables Bright-Eyed Berry protein sandwich. We did not run a taste test. We scored:
- Protein per sandwich and per 100 calories
- Total and added sugar, as each label lists it
- The bread: whole grain, enriched flour or a mix
- Fat and carbs, as each brand publishes them
- Storage, thawing and where you can buy it
Five sandwiches, one grid
Here are the label numbers for all five sandwiches. Clean Eatz Grape and Strawberry share the same macros, so one row covers both.
Clean Eatz describes its spread as low sugar, but the product page doesn't list sugar grams yet. We left those cells blank rather than guess.

Clean Eatz Protein PB&J
Most protein per calorie
The Clean Eatz Protein PB&J is made with whole-grain bread, protein peanut butter and a low-sugar spread. Grape and Strawberry come in at 250 calories, 10g of fat, 28g of carbs and 11g of protein. Honey is also 250 calories, with 12g of fat, 25g of carbs and 12g of protein. It's ready to eat straight from the package, no heating required.
It doesn't just add protein to a classic PB&J. It changes the bread, the peanut butter and the spread too.
- 11 to 12g of protein for 250 calories, the best ratio of the five sandwiches
- Whole-grain bread, protein peanut butter and a low-sugar spread
- Ready to eat, no heating or prep
- $2.99 each, and you can add it to any meal plan order or buy it on its own
- Sugar and fiber grams aren't on the product page yet
- Sold online only, so you can't grab one at the store
- The 16-pack is $47.95, about $3.00 a sandwich, so it saves trips, not money
Jams
Best in stores
Jams takes a retail approach. Its Strawberry sandwich has 260 calories, 14g of fat, 25g of carbs, 4g of fiber, 6g of total sugar, 4g of added sugar and 10g of protein, per the nutrition panel on Jams' site. The brand highlights no seed oils, no artificial dyes and no high fructose corn syrup. The bread is made with whole white wheat flour and enriched flour, the peanut butter with peanuts and RSPO palm oil, and the jelly with strawberries, invert sugar and sugar.
- Lowest published added sugar here, 4g, and 4g of fiber
- 10g of protein, well above classic Uncrustables
- Sold at Walmart and Target nationwide
- Flexible: eat it frozen, after about 20 minutes, or fully thawed
- 260 calories and 14g of fat for 10g of protein, a lower protein ratio than ours
- The bread mixes whole white wheat flour with enriched flour
- Keeps only about 48 hours in the fridge once thawed, per Jams
Smucker's Uncrustables
Easiest to find
Standard Uncrustables remain the most familiar option. The classic Peanut Butter & Grape Jelly sandwich has 210 calories, 9g of fat, 28g of carbs, 6g of protein, 10g of total sugar and 8g of added sugar. The Bright-Eyed Berry protein sandwich raises protein to 12g, but it also comes with 320 calories, 18g of fat, 33g of carbs, 12g of total sugar and 10g of added sugar, per Smucker's product pages. Its bread combines whole wheat flour with enriched flour.
- Sold almost everywhere, in 4 to 18 count boxes
- Keeps up to 9 months frozen and up to 5 days in the fridge
- The Bright-Eyed Berry version matches our Honey flavor at 12g of protein
- The classic has 6g of protein and 8g of added sugar
- The protein version costs 320 calories and 10g of added sugar for its 12g
- Needs 30 to 60 minutes to thaw, and Smucker's says not to microwave it
Four categories, one call each
A grid tells you what's in each sandwich. It doesn't tell you which number matters for you. Here are four categories, with a call on each.
Credit where it is due: each of the three brands wins at least one.
Protein per calorie
Winner: Clean Eatz Kitchen
Protein can make a snack more satisfying, which is why protein versions of familiar foods have taken off. But a bigger protein number doesn't automatically make a better sandwich. Divide protein by calories and the picture gets clearer. Clean Eatz Grape works out to 4.4g of protein per 100 calories and Honey to 4.8g. Jams lands at 3.8g, Bright-Eyed Berry at 3.75g and the classic Uncrustables at 2.9g.
Put another way, Bright-Eyed Berry and our Honey flavor both have 12g of protein, but ours gets there with 70 fewer calories and 6g less fat. That's the difference between a snack and a small meal.
There's a caution on the other side, too. A 2024 study in Nutrients looked at 36 high-protein processed foods sold in Spain and found protein made up anywhere from 10 to 88% of them. In that population protein intake already ran above recommendations, the authors noted, and half of the people who ate these products did so without keeping track. A protein PB&J is a better snack, not a reason to stack protein products all day. For how protein fits into a weight loss diet, see our complete guide to the best foods for weight loss.
Bread & ingredients
Result: Close call
Bread is easy to overlook in a PB&J, but it's most of the sandwich. Clean Eatz uses whole-grain bread. Jams uses wheat bread made with whole white wheat flour, and its ingredient list also includes enriched flour. Uncrustables Bright-Eyed Berry combines whole wheat flour with enriched flour, and the classic uses enriched flour.
That doesn't make white wheat a bad ingredient. Whole white wheat is still a whole grain. The point is to read the full list: a bread made mainly with whole grains is not the same as one that mixes whole-grain flour with enriched flour.
Whole grains keep more of the natural grain, including fiber and nutrients. A 2025 umbrella review in Food & Function pooled 25 meta-analyses of randomized trials and found whole grains improved markers of blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, body weight and inflammation. A 2025 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports of 9 cohort studies found people eating the most whole grains had a 26% lower risk of high blood pressure, while refined grains showed no clear link. Those are diet-wide patterns, not the effect of one sandwich, but they're a reason bread quality counts.
We call it close. Our bread is whole grain by description, and Jams lists a whole-grain flour first. Neither of us publishes how much of the loaf is whole grain.
Sugar on the label
Winner: Jams
Sugar is worth checking in a snack that already tastes like a treat. Jams lists 6g of total sugar and 4g of added sugar for Strawberry. The classic Uncrustables list 10g and 8g, and Bright-Eyed Berry lists 12g and 10g. Clean Eatz describes its spread as low sugar, but our product page doesn't list total or added sugar grams yet, so Jams takes this one on what it publishes.
Total sugar is all the sugar in the product. Added sugar is what was added during processing. The FDA sets the Daily Value for added sugars at 50g a day on a 2,000-calorie diet, and the Dietary Guidelines advise keeping added sugars under 10% of daily calories. Jams' 4g is 8% of that Daily Value. Bright-Eyed Berry's 10g is 20%.
None of this means avoiding sugar. A PB&J is supposed to taste sweet. The goal is a sandwich that gives you the flavor without spending a fifth of your daily added sugar on a snack.
Convenience & storage
Winner: Uncrustables
Uncrustables win on reach. They're sold almost everywhere, in boxes of 4 to 18, keep up to 9 months frozen and stay soft up to 5 days in the fridge. You thaw them 30 to 60 minutes and eat them within 8 hours. Jams is sold at Walmart and Target and is meant to stay frozen, then sit about 20 minutes before eating.
Ours is ready to eat out of the package and ships with your order, so it's easiest if you already order Clean Eatz meals. You can buy it on its own or add it to any meal plan, alongside the rest of our High Protein Grab & Go snacks.
One Clean Eatz Protein PB&J each weekday is 5 sandwiches at $2.99, $14.95 a week. The 16-pack is $47.95, about $3.00 a sandwich, so buy it to stock up, not to save. Jams and Uncrustables prices vary by store, so check your local shelf before you compare.
Pick by how you shop

Classic Uncrustables are the pick if price, familiarity and finding one anywhere matter most. The protein versions add protein, but also calories, fat and added sugar. For the other two, use the lists below.

- You want whole-grain bread, solid protein and reasonable calories in one snack
- You already order Clean Eatz meals and want an easy snack or light meal in the same box
- You want a sandwich that's ready to eat with no thawing

Read the whole sandwich
A protein PB&J can fit into a balanced eating routine, but the best choice depends on what you want from it. If you're looking past protein alone, the Clean Eatz Protein PB&J stands out for its whole-grain bread, 11 to 12g of protein and 250 calories. Jams is the convenient retail pick and a better macro choice than standard Uncrustables. Traditional Uncrustables are familiar, affordable and easy to find, but they are not the strongest option nutritionally.
Before you buy, flip the box over. Protein per calorie, added sugar and the first flour on the ingredient list tell you more than the protein claim on the front.
Your questions
Short answers to the questions we hear most. This content is for education only and doesn't replace personal advice from your doctor or a registered dietitian.
Which protein PB&J has the most protein?
Clean Eatz Honey and Uncrustables Bright-Eyed Berry tie at 12g of protein a sandwich. Clean Eatz Grape and Strawberry have 11g, Jams has 10g and classic Uncrustables Peanut Butter & Grape Jelly has 6g. Per calorie, Clean Eatz leads, because Bright-Eyed Berry needs 320 calories to reach its 12g and ours needs 250.
Is Clean Eatz PB&J healthier than Jams?
On protein, yes. Clean Eatz has 11 to 12g of protein for 250 calories on whole-grain bread, while Jams has 10g for 260 calories. Jams publishes 4g of added sugar and 4g of fiber, and we don't list sugar grams yet. Jams is a good store-bought option if you want one today.

They can fit if they match your calorie needs. Look for enough protein to keep you full, reasonable calories, whole grains when possible and less added sugar. A 250-calorie sandwich with 11 to 12g of protein fits most snack budgets. Two of them is a meal, so count them that way.
