Is Chipotle healthy? A 455-calorie bowl with 43g protein

It can be. The same chicken runs from a 455-calorie bowl to a 1,370-calorie burrito. Chipotle publishes a number for every scoop, so here's what each one costs in calories, protein and sodium.

Chipotle is easier to analyze than most chains because it publishes a number for every scoop. That also means every scoop you add counts, including the ones that feel harmless.

The figures below come from Chipotle's U.S. nutrition facts, and we cross-checked them against the bowls on its High Protein Menu page in November 2026. Where Chipotle prints a total, our addition matched it. Portions are scooped by hand, so your own bowl may differ a little.

Is Chipotle healthy for weight loss

Is Chipotle actually healthy?

Quick answer

It can be. A chicken bowl with light brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and tomatillo-green salsa is 455 calories with 43 grams of protein. The same chicken in a fully loaded burrito is 1,370 calories and 2,390 mg of sodium.

The restaurant isn't what decides it. The build is. Chipotle's base ingredients are mostly recognizable food, and you choose every one of them, so a good order and a bad one can sit on the same line a few feet apart. The 900-calorie gap between those two orders comes from four or five scoops that each seemed reasonable.

Sodium is the part that people miss. Even the lean bowl has 1,025 mg, about 45% of the 2,300 mg daily value. If you eat here once in a while, that's not a big deal. If you eat here several times a week, or you've been told to watch your sodium, it's the number to manage.

Which Chipotle protein is the best pick?

Quick answer

Chicken, at 32 grams of protein for 180 calories. That's half again as much protein as steak for 30 more calories. Sofritas are the surprise, with just 8 grams of protein and 560 mg of sodium per scoop.

Sour cream1102 g0 g30 mg
Flour tortilla (burrito)3208 g3 g600 mg

Standard servings from Chipotle's nutrition chart

Chicken is the clear protein pick. Steak has fewer calories, but you give up 11 grams of protein to save 30 calories. Sofritas are where the table surprises people, with the most sodium of any protein and 8 grams of protein, the same as a scoop of beans. If you're choosing sofritas for protein, they won't deliver it. Vegetarians can make up the gap with beans, at 8 grams and 7 to 8 grams of fiber a scoop.

Light rice

Rice is the easiest scoop to shrink. White and brown are both 210 calories, and brown has 160 mg less sodium and a gram more fiber. Asking for light rice gets you about a half scoop, which we confirmed by adding up Chipotle's own published bowls. It saves about 105 calories without much change to how the bowl eats.

Toppings

Guacamole is the biggest single topping at 230 calories. It does bring 6 grams of fiber and mostly unsaturated fat, so a half scoop is a reasonable place to spend calories if you want it. Cheese and sour cream have 110 calories each and much more saturated fat, at 5 grams and 7 grams. Lettuce is close to free, so add as much as you like.

Chipotle salsa sodium

How much sodium is in Chipotle salsa?

Quick answer

Between 260 and 550 mg per serving. Fresh tomato has 25 calories and 550 mg of sodium, which is more than the chicken under it. Swapping it for tomatillo-green saves 290 mg and barely changes anything else.

Fresh tomato salsa is the lowest-calorie thing in most bowls and one of the saltiest. The other salsas vary a lot.

Chipotle salsas by serving
SalsaCaloriesSodium
Tomatillo-green15260 mg
Roasted chili-corn80330 mg
Tomatillo-red30500 mg
Fresh tomato25550 mg

Chipotle salsas by serving

For calorie counters, this barely matters. For anyone watching sodium, it's the most useful swap on the line, because the FDA's daily value is less than 2,300 mg and a bowl with two salsas can use up well over half of that before you've added a topping.

Chipotle bowl vs burrito

Is a bowl healthier than a burrito?

Quick answer

Yes, by exactly one tortilla: 320 calories and 600 mg of sodium. Everything inside a burrito can go into a bowl unchanged. If you want something to hold, 2 crispy corn tortillas on the side add just 140 calories and no sodium.

The tortilla is a single line item, so this comparison is simple. Choosing the bowl saves those 320 calories and 600 mg of sodium, and you give up 8 grams of protein and 50 grams of carbohydrate. A bowl is also easier to split into two meals.

If you want the crunch, a crispy corn tortilla is 70 calories with 0 mg of sodium. Two of them on the side cost 140 calories, less than half the burrito wrap.

Chipotle GLP-1 bowls

Are Chipotle's GLP-1 bowls a good choice?

Quick answer

They're good on protein and fiber but high in sodium. The High Protein-High Fiber Bowl adds up to 545 calories, 46 grams of protein and 14 grams of fiber, with 1,645 mg of sodium. Dropping the fresh tomato salsa cuts that to 1,095 mg.

Chipotle labels two bowls "GLP-1 Friendly" on its High Protein Menu. The label is Chipotle's marketing, not a medical standard, so we ran both through its own chart.

BowlCaloriesProteinFiberSodium
High Protein-High Fiber: chicken, light brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, corn salsa, fresh tomato salsa, lettuce54546 g14 g1,645 mg
High Protein-Low Calorie: chicken, supergreens, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole47036 g10 g1,395 mg

Chipotle's 2 GLP-1 Friendly bowls, added up

Both totals match the protein Chipotle advertises, and the fiber matches on the first bowl. The first bowl carries about 72% of a day's sodium, and 880 mg of that comes from the two salsas. If you're on a GLP-1 medication and eating smaller amounts overall, dropping the fresh tomato salsa takes it to about 1,095 mg. Do the same with the second bowl and it falls to about 845 mg.

Protein and fiber are the two things most worth protecting when appetite drops, and our GLP-1 diet guide covers that in more detail. On the fiber side, black beans do most of the work here, at 7 grams a scoop. Our guide to dietary fiber explains why that matters. If you're on one of these medications, your prescriber or dietitian can give you targets that suit your own dose and side effects.

Double protein bowl

The Double High Protein Bowl gets the headline, at 81 grams of protein for 760 calories. That's real, and the protein per calorie is strong. It also comes to about 1,895 mg of sodium by our math, or about 82% of a day. Most people don't need 81 grams in one sitting. Half of it saved for tomorrow is a good deal.

Healthiest Chipotle order

What's the healthiest order at Chipotle?

Quick answer

Our default is a bowl with chicken, light brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, tomatillo-green salsa and lettuce. It's 455 calories, 43 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber and 1,025 mg of sodium. Add guacamole only if you have room.

Burrito: flour tortilla, chicken, white rice, pinto beans, corn salsa, cheese, sour cream, guacamole1,37065 g2,390 mg

3 Chipotle orders, added up

The first bowl is the one to default to. The second is what a sensible-feeling order tends to look like once guacamole goes on, and it's already past two-thirds of a day's sodium. The burrito is a normal order, and it runs about 900 calories more than the first bowl. It also has about 20 grams of saturated fat, against 3 grams in the first bowl, and the Dietary Guidelines cap saturated fat at 10% of daily calories, or about 22 grams on 2,000.

Chips

A regular bag of chips is 540 calories and 390 mg of sodium by itself, and a side of guacamole takes it to 770 calories, more than the whole first bowl. Chipotle lists a regular bag as serving 2, so splitting it is fair. Most people don't.

Chipotle vs a ready-made taco bowl

How does a ready-made bowl compare?

Quick answer

Our XL Beef Taco Bowl has 520 calories, 50 grams of protein and 550 mg of sodium. That's more calories than the lean Chipotle bowl and about half the sodium. Chipotle wins on flexibility. The ready meal wins on repeating it.

Our XL Beef Taco Bowl is 520 calories, 50 grams of protein and 550 mg of sodium, according to our nutrition page. That's 65 more calories than the lean Chipotle bowl above, 7 more grams of protein and 475 mg less sodium. Not every meal on our menu is that low in sodium, since ours run from 360 to 1,550 mg, so check the label if you're watching it.

Chipotle wins on flexibility, and a careful order there is a good meal. What's hard is making the careful order every time, when you're hungry and the person behind you is waiting. If you want the protein and portions decided before you're hungry, our High Protein Meal Plan starts at $63 and adds 2 ounces of meat to each meal, and our GLP-1 Meal Plan starts at $94.95 if you're on one of those medications. Neither needs a subscription, and both heat in a few minutes.

Chipotle & weight loss questions

Chipotle questions

Is Chipotle good for weight loss?

A bowl can be. Chicken, light brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and tomatillo-green salsa comes to 455 calories with 43 grams of protein. A burrito with the usual toppings is closer to 1,400 calories, so the build decides it, not the restaurant. Watch the chips and drinks too, since those aren't in the totals.

How much does asking for light rice save?

About half the rice. A regular scoop of either rice is 210 calories, and Chipotle's own published bowl totals only add up if a light scoop is half of that, so light rice saves about 105 calories. That's also about 2 grams of protein and, with brown rice, 95 mg of sodium. Scoops vary by hand.
