Following a keto diet doesn't mean your social life is over. You can have a drink and stay within your carbs, as long as you know what's in the glass.
It isn't only about the carbs, though. A zero-carb vodka soda still changes what your body burns for the next few hours, and that part rarely makes it onto the label. Here's the full picture, with the numbers.

What alcohol can you drink on keto?
Quick answer
Plain 80-proof spirits (0g of carbs per 1.5 ounces) and dry wine (about 4g per 5 ounces) are your best bets. Light beer runs about 3 to 6g per 12 ounces. Regular beer, about 13g, and sweet wine usually don't fit.
| Drink | Serving | Carbs | Keto fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirits (80 proof) | 1.5 oz | 0g | Excellent |
| Dry wine (red or white) | 5 oz | About 4g | Good |
| Brut champagne or sparkling (estimate, check the bottle) | 5 oz | 3 to 4g | Good |
| Light beer | 12 oz | About 5 to 6g, ultralights about 3g (estimate) | Acceptable |
| Regular beer | 12 oz | About 13g | Avoid |
| Dessert wine | 5 oz | About 20g | Avoid |
| Sugary cocktails (estimate, varies by recipe) | Varies | 15 to 30g or more | Avoid |
Carbs per serving, from USDA FoodData Central except where marked
Standard drink reference: one standard drink is about 14 grams of alcohol, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the CDC. That's 12 ounces of beer at 5% ABV, 5 ounces of wine at 12% ABV or 1.5 ounces of spirits at 40% ABV.
Those carb numbers assume the drink is plain. Most of the real damage comes from what gets poured in with it, which is why the mixer section below matters as much as this table.
How alcohol affects ketosis
How does alcohol affect ketosis & fat burning?
Quick answer
It puts fat burning on hold for a while. In one small study, about two drinks' worth of alcohol cut whole-body fat oxidation by 73%. That doesn't necessarily knock you out of ketosis, but it does slow your progress.
Your liver's priority system
Most alcohol is broken down in the liver, as this review of alcohol metabolism explains, and your body deals with it ahead of other fuels. A stable-isotope study measured what that looks like: eight healthy men drank 24 grams of alcohol, a bit under two standard drinks, and whole-body fat oxidation fell 73% in the hours afterward. Eight people is a small sample, and all of them were men. The direction is still clear.
This doesn't mean you're kicked out of ketosis, especially if you choose zero-carb options. It does mean fat burning slows while your body clears the alcohol.
The calorie factor
Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, nearly as calorie-dense as fat at 9. Even a zero-carb vodka soda counts. A standard drink's 14 grams of alcohol is about 98 calories before you add mixers.
These are calories with no meaningful vitamins, minerals or fiber attached. If weight loss is your goal, those drinks can slow things down even when they're technically keto-friendly.
The tolerance shift
Many people on keto report feeling alcohol faster and stronger. The best direct evidence is in animals: in a 2026 study, rats on a ketogenic diet had higher blood alcohol levels than rats on regular chow and lower levels of a key liver enzyme that breaks alcohol down. That's rats, not people, so treat it as a plausible explanation rather than proof.
Food matters too. A meal slows how quickly alcohol is absorbed, and meals high in fat, carbohydrate or protein all do it about equally, so a keto meal counts. What doesn't help is drinking on an empty stomach, which is easier to end up doing when your appetite is lower.
The practical version: your usual two-drink limit might need to become a one-drink limit. Find that out at home, not at the end of a long dinner.
Best alcoholic drinks for keto
Which alcoholic drinks are lowest in carbs?
Quick answer
Vodka, gin, tequila, rum and whiskey at 80 proof have no carbs and about 97 calories per 1.5 ounces. Next come dry wines at about 4g per 5 ounces, then light beer, which varies more by brand than most people expect.
Spirits have zero carbs
Vodka, gin, tequila, rum and whiskey are your best picks. At 80 proof (40% alcohol), they contain virtually zero carbs and about 97 calories per 1.5-ounce shot, per USDA data. The catch is the mixer. A vodka tonic sounds innocent until you learn that 12 ounces of regular tonic has about 32 grams of sugar, not far off the 37 grams in the same amount of cola.
Dry wine fits a keto budget
Dry wines are surprisingly keto-friendly. USDA data puts a 5-ounce pour of red or white at about 3.8 grams of carbs, which is manageable if you're tracking your intake. Look for these styles:
- Dry whites: sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, unoaked chardonnay
- Dry reds: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir
- Sparkling: brut or extra-brut champagne and prosecco
When ordering at a restaurant, ask for a dry wine and watch the pour. Restaurant glasses can be generous, and you might be getting 7 or 8 ounces without realizing it. At 8 ounces, the same wine has about 6 grams of carbs.
Light beer can work
If you're a beer person, light beer can fit, but the range is wider than the old rule of thumb. USDA's average for light beer works out to about 5.8 grams per 12 ounces. Some ultralight brands list about 3 grams, so check the label or website. Just don't assume a craft IPA will work. Most run 12 to 15 grams or more per bottle, and regular beer averages about 13.
Keto cocktail mixers & recipes
What should you mix with spirits on keto?
Quick answer
Soda water, seltzer, diet mixers, unsweetened iced tea or a squeeze of citrus. Skip regular soda, tonic, juice, sour mix and cream liqueurs. A 6-ounce pour of cranberry cocktail alone carries about 22 grams of sugar.
This is where a keto drink usually falls apart. You order a vodka cranberry thinking it's fine, and a 6-ounce pour of cranberry cocktail adds about 22 grams of sugar. Here's the short list.
Keto-friendly mixers
- Soda water or seltzer (zero everything)
- Diet sodas or zero-sugar mixers, if sweeteners don't bother you
- Unsweetened iced tea or cold brew coffee
- Fresh citrus wedge or peel for flavor
- Bitters, just a dash because they're concentrated
Mixers to skip on keto
- Regular soda and tonic water
- Fruit juices, even the healthy-sounding ones
- Sour mix or simple syrup
- Energy drinks, since most are loaded with sugar
- Cream liqueurs like Baileys or Kahlua
Easy keto cocktail recipes
- Vodka lemon sparkler: 1.5 oz vodka, soda water, a squeeze of fresh lemon, ice
- Tequila lime refresher: 1.5 oz tequila, soda water, lime wedge, a pinch of salt
- Keto gin & tonic: 1.5 oz gin, diet tonic or soda water, lime, fresh cucumber
- Whiskey citrus: 1.5 oz whiskey on ice with an orange peel twist
- Skinny Paloma: 2 oz tequila, soda water, a squeeze of fresh grapefruit, salt rim
Keto-friendly drinking strategy
How do you drink on keto without losing ground?
Quick answer
Eat a full meal first, alternate every drink with water, decide on your snack ahead of time and count the calories. A couple of drinks can add 200 to 300 calories, which is a big piece of a daily deficit.
Eat first
Try not to drink on an empty stomach, especially on keto. Food in the stomach slows alcohol absorption, and that includes protein and fat. If you're using one of our meal plans, have a full meal before heading out. It also helps you avoid the late-night food decisions you'd rather not explain to your tracker.
Keep up with fluids
Alcohol increases fluid loss, and the early days of keto do too as glycogen and its water go. Together they can leave you dehydrated fast. Alternate every alcoholic drink with a full glass of water or seltzer. On hot days or after workouts, consider adding electrolytes to your water to replace what you're losing.
Plan your snacks
Alcohol loosens inhibitions and can trigger cravings. Have a plan before you start drinking. If you know you'll want to snack, set out something that fits your plan ahead of time: string cheese, pepperoni, measured nuts or vegetable sticks with guacamole.
Track those calories
At about 7 calories per gram, even zero-carb drinks add up. If you're trying to lose weight, those calories need to fit into your daily target. A couple of drinks can easily add 200 to 300 calories to your day, and that's significant when you're working with a deficit.
Keto alcohol mistakes to avoid
What mistakes do people make with alcohol on keto?
Quick answer
Treating low-carb as a free pass, drinking at their old tolerance, forgetting the mixer, drinking during the first weeks of keto and ignoring blood sugar risks. That last one is serious if you take diabetes medication, so talk with your doctor.
Assuming low-carb means free pass
A drink with zero carbs can still affect your progress. Your body still has to process that alcohol, and fat burning slows while it does. If fat loss has stalled, alcohol is worth a look even when it's technically keto-approved.
Not adjusting for lower tolerance
You may get tipsy faster on keto. What used to be a moderate amount might now leave you impaired. Start with less than you think you need, and give it time to hit before having another. Don't drive. Your usual limits may no longer apply.
Forgetting about mixers
That vodka something you ordered at the bar? Unless you specifically asked for soda water or a diet mixer, it probably came with regular tonic, juice or soda. Always specify your mixer. Your bartender has heard weirder requests.
Drinking when you're just starting keto
If you're in your first week or two and still adapting, with what people call keto flu, skip the alcohol. It can make you feel worse and it makes your new tolerance harder to judge. Waiting 2 to 3 weeks before reintroducing drinks is a cautious habit rather than a tested rule, and it's an easy one to keep.
Ignoring blood sugar concerns
Alcohol can lower blood sugar, because the liver stops releasing glucose while it processes alcohol. MedlinePlus notes the risk is especially serious with insulin or certain diabetes medicines, and greater if you drink without eating. If you have a medical condition or take glucose-lowering medication, talk with your doctor before drinking on keto.
Alcohol on keto next steps
Should you drink on keto at all?
Quick answer
You can, within limits. Choose zero-carb spirits or dry wine, use smart mixers and stay hydrated. Just know that even keto-friendly drinks slow fat burning for a while, so if fat loss is your main goal, fewer is better.
Can you drink alcohol on keto? Yes. Should you drink it all the time? Probably not, especially if fat loss is your primary goal. Choose zero-carb spirits or dry wines, use smart mixers, stay hydrated and accept that even keto-friendly drinks slow fat burning for a while.
Pay attention to what's happening. If your weight loss has stalled, your energy is tanking or you notice your drinking becoming a pattern you don't like, it's time to reassess and to talk with your doctor. Alcohol is an optional part of a social life, not part of the plan.

Alcohol on keto FAQ
Drinking on keto
Will alcohol kick me out of ketosis?
Not through carbs, if you choose zero-carb options. Your body does prioritize clearing the alcohol, though, and fat burning slows while it happens. Small amounts of zero or low-carb alcohol won't add many carbs, but they will slow your progress temporarily. Sweet mixers are what usually push you over your limit.
What are the best alcoholic drinks on keto?
80-proof spirits like vodka, gin, tequila, rum and whiskey have 0g of carbs per 1.5 ounces. Dry wines have about 4g per 5 ounces, and brut champagne or sparkling wine is similar. Light beer runs about 5 to 6g per 12 ounces, with ultralights near 3g. Avoid regular beer.
Are hard seltzers keto-friendly?
Many are. Many hard seltzers list 0 to 2g of carbs per can, which fits most keto budgets. Brands vary, though, so check the nutrition panel or the brand's website before you drink one, because some varieties and flavors contain noticeably more carbs than others.
What wines are best for keto?
Dry styles: brut or extra-brut sparkling wines, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot grigio, dry rose and dry reds like cabernet, merlot or pinot noir. Stick to 5-ounce pours. Avoid off-dry, sweet or dessert wines, which carry far more carbs, about 20g per 5 ounces for a sweet dessert wine.
Can I get drunk faster on keto?
Many people report it, and a 2026 rat study found higher blood alcohol on a ketogenic diet, though human data is thin. Eating less and drinking on an empty stomach both make it more likely. Assume your tolerance is lower, pace yourself and never drive after drinking.
What mixers should I use with spirits on keto?
Use zero-carb mixers: soda water, seltzer, diet sodas or zero-sugar options, unsweetened iced tea, cold brew coffee, or just a citrus peel or wedge for flavor. Avoid regular soda, tonic water, juice, sour mix, simple syrup and cream liqueurs, all of which bring sugar with them.
Are there any safety concerns with alcohol on keto?
Yes. Alcohol can lower blood sugar, which may raise hypoglycemia risk, especially if you take glucose-lowering medication. It also adds to fluid loss, so dehydration comes on faster. Drink in moderation, avoid driving, and talk with your doctor if you have a medical condition or take medication.
Does alcohol have calories on keto?
Yes. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, almost as much as fat at 9. They come with almost no nutrition attached. Even zero-carb drinks add calories that count toward your daily total, which can slow weight loss if you aren't accounting for them, at about 98 calories a standard drink.
