Quick Answer: Yes, if you order grilled. Twelve Grilled Nuggets and a fruit cup come to 270 calories and 39g of protein, per Chick-fil-A's own nutrition data. The problem is the default order. A Chicken Sandwich, medium Waffle Fries and one packet of Chick-fil-A Sauce total 980 calories, and the Cobb Salad carries more sodium than the sandwich and fries combined.
Chick-fil-A has one of the best high-protein items in fast food and one of the worst "healthy" ones, sometimes on the same tray. Which one you get mostly comes down to one choice at the counter: grilled or fried. Every figure below is from Chick-fil-A's nutrition and allergen page, verified September 2026. Sauces and drinks are counted separately.
What to order for your goal
| If you want | Order | Calories | Protein | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The most protein for the calories | 12-count Grilled Nuggets + medium Fruit Cup | 270 | 39g | 660mg |
| A sandwich | Grilled Chicken Sandwich + medium Fruit Cup | 460 | 29g | 765mg |
| Something small (low appetite) | 8-count Grilled Nuggets | 130 | 25g | 440mg |
| Breakfast | Egg White Grill | 300 | 27g | 990mg |
The nuggets are the order to beat. Twelve of them are 200 calories and 38g of protein on their own, which is more protein than the Spicy Deluxe Sandwich (34g) at well under half the calories (540). Add the fruit cup for 70 calories and you have a meal most people would struggle to match at home without a food scale.
The low-appetite row is there for a reason. If you're on a GLP-1 medication and a few bites is all you can manage, protein per bite matters more than anything else on the menu, and eight grilled nuggets put 25g of protein into 130 calories. Our GLP-1 diet guide explains why protein comes first when appetite drops.
At breakfast, the choice is lopsided. The Egg White Grill and the Chicken, Egg & Cheese Biscuit have the same 27g of protein. The biscuit costs you another 250 calories and 880mg of sodium to get there.
What a typical order adds up to
Most people don't walk in and ask for twelve grilled nuggets. They order the Chicken Sandwich (420 calories, 1,460mg sodium), medium Waffle Fries (420 calories, 240mg) and a packet of Chick-fil-A Sauce (140 calories, 13g of fat). That's 980 calories.
Sodium from the sandwich and fries alone is 1,700mg, or 74% of the FDA's 2,300mg daily value. The real figure is higher, because Chick-fil-A's sauce page lists calories and fat but not sodium.
The fries are the easiest fix. A medium order has exactly as many calories as the sandwich, and a large (600) has more. Swapping them for a fruit cup saves 350 calories and keeps the meal feeling like a meal.
Drinks can undo everything else. A Frosted Lemonade is 350 calories. A Cookies & Cream Milkshake is 630, which is more than the sandwich it's sitting next to.
Grilled or fried: the gap is mostly salt
People switch to grilled to save calories. On the sandwich, that barely happens: the fried version is 420 calories and the grilled one is 390. Thirty calories.
Sodium is a different story. The fried sandwich has 1,460mg and the grilled has 765mg, so grilled cuts it nearly in half. Nuggets show the same pattern more sharply. Eight fried nuggets are 250 calories and 1,210mg of sodium; eight grilled are 130 calories and 440mg. Protein barely moves (27g versus 25g).
So if sodium is the number you're watching, grilled is the single biggest lever on the menu. If calories are, it helps less than you'd expect on the sandwich and a lot on the nuggets. Lean, grilled protein is near the top of our list of the best foods for weight loss for exactly this reason: it fills you up without much else attached.
The Spicy Deluxe Sandwich sits at the other extreme, with 1,880mg of sodium, or 82% of the daily value in one item.
Skip the Cobb Salad
The standard Cobb Salad comes with fried nuggets and Avocado Lime Ranch dressing on top of its other toppings. As listed, it's 830 calories and 2,180mg of sodium. That's 95% of a day's sodium, and more than the Chicken Sandwich and medium fries put together.
Swapping the nuggets for a grilled filet brings it down to 610 calories. Better, and still more than the Grilled Chicken Sandwich.
The Market Salad is the lighter option, but it isn't light. With its toppings and Zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette, it's 550 calories and 1,010mg of sodium. The dressing alone is 230 calories, so using half the packet brings the salad to about 435. If you order a salad here for the vegetables, that's the version to get.
How the best order compares with a prepared meal
The 270-calorie nugget order holds up well against what we build in our own kitchen. Our Basic Chicken Breast & Sweet Potatoes is 300 calories, 40g of protein and 580mg of sodium, and the numbers for every meal on the current menu are on our nutrition page.
Where Chick-fil-A gets harder is repetition. The good order has to be chosen every visit, at the counter, next to the fries. If you'd rather make that decision once, before you're hungry, our Weight Loss Meal Plan ships portion-controlled meals with the macros already worked out.
Chick-fil-A isn't the only chain where a good order hides behind a bad default. See how Chipotle orders break down by goal, or compare chains side by side in our guide to the healthiest fast food.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chick-fil-A healthier than McDonald's?
On protein per calorie, usually. The Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich has 420 calories and 29g of protein; a Big Mac has 580 calories and 22g. Chick-fil-A's grilled items widen that gap further. Either chain can produce a 1,000-calorie meal if you order the default combo.
Is Chick-fil-A good for weight loss?
It can fit. The grilled orders above run from 130 to 460 calories with 25g to 39g of protein. The risk is the default order, which lands near 1,000 calories once fries and a sauce are added.
