Is Yogurt Good for Weight Loss? Greek vs. Regular, by the Numbers
Listen to this article10 min
The verdict

Yes, yogurt can help with weight loss, and plain Greek yogurt is the strongest choice. A 3/4-cup (170g) serving of Fage Total 0% plain Greek has 90 calories and 18g of protein. The same serving of Dannon plain low-fat regular yogurt has 90 calories and 7g. Flavored yogurt is the one to watch: Dannon's vanilla low-fat has 12g of added sugar.

Yogurt helps for the same reason most high-protein foods do: it fills you up for its calories. The type you buy changes that more than people expect. Greek yogurt is strained, which removes liquid whey and some of the milk sugar and concentrates the protein. Regular yogurt keeps both.

Below, the label numbers for five yogurts at the same 170g serving, taken from each brand's own nutrition facts on October 30, 2026, then what a small but useful study found about yogurt and hunger.

Greek vs regular yogurt verdict

Greek wins, plain wins bigger

We judged Greek vs regular yogurt on what changes your day: protein for the calories, sugar, fat and how long a cup holds you.

Greek takes protein, sugar and fullness. Regular takes calcium and vitamin D. Calories come out even when both are plain.

So, is yogurt good for weight loss? Yes, if it's plain and it replaces something. Plain Greek yogurt gives you more than twice the protein of regular yogurt for the same calories, and about half the sugar, because straining removes some lactose along with the whey. None of the plain yogurts here has added sugar. The sugar on their labels is milk sugar.

The bigger lever is flavor. A cup of vanilla yogurt carries 50 more calories than plain, and almost all of them are added sugar. Pick plain, sweeten it yourself, and put the calories you save into protein.

Greek & regular yogurt at a glance

Same cup, five labels

Every number below is for the same 3/4-cup (170g) serving, from each brand's own nutrition facts. That's the serving Dannon uses and the one Fage lists for its large tubs.

One catch: Fage's single-serve cup is 150g, not 170g. That cup of Total 0% is 80 calories and 16g of protein, which is why you may see those numbers quoted for a 6-ounce serving. They belong to a smaller cup.

The plain Greek yogurts lead on protein by a wide margin: 18g in the nonfat serving against 7g in plain low-fat regular yogurt, at the same 90 calories. That's about 2.6 times the protein. We compared:

  • Calories and protein per 170g serving
  • Total sugar and added sugar, plain vs flavored
  • Fat level: nonfat, low-fat and whole milk
  • Calcium and vitamin D on the label
  • Fullness, from a controlled snack study

Greek vs regular yogurt nutrition side by side

Row by row

The table gives the quick answer. This breakdown explains each row and names a winner where there is one.

Greek yogurt takes two categories, regular takes one, and calories end in a tie because fat level matters less than style.

Protein & fullness

Winner: Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt's protein edge shows up in hunger, not just on the label. A 2013 study in Appetite gave 15 healthy women a 160-calorie afternoon yogurt snack with 5g, 14g or 24g of protein, or no snack. Every yogurt snack reduced hunger for about two hours. The high-protein Greek yogurt did the most: those women waited 178 minutes before asking for dinner, compared with 124 minutes after no snack and 152 after the low-protein yogurt.

Two caveats belong here. Fifteen women is a small sample, and the snacks didn't fully pay for themselves at dinner: the women ate a little less, but not 160 calories less. The direction still matches the labels. At the same calories, the yogurt with more protein holds you longer, and that's Greek yogurt.

Calories & fat

Result: Even match

Plain nonfat Greek and plain low-fat regular yogurt land on the same 90 calories. Fat level matters less than style. The whole-milk Fage 5% is 160 calories with 9g of fat, 70 more calories than the nonfat cup, and it still has 15g of protein, more than twice that of any regular yogurt on the list. Dannon's whole milk plain is 110 calories with 6g of protein.

If whole-milk yogurt keeps you satisfied longer, those calories can be worth it. If you're counting closely, nonfat Greek gives you the most protein for the fewest calories. Call it even: the right fat level is the one you'll eat.

Sugar: plain vs flavored

Winner: Plain Greek yogurt

Plain Greek yogurt has about half the sugar of plain regular yogurt, 5g against 7 to 10g, because straining removes some lactose. Neither has added sugar. Flavor is where the numbers jump.

Dannon's vanilla low-fat yogurt has 140 calories and 21g of sugar per 170g serving, and 12g of that is added. The plain version of the same yogurt is 90 calories with no added sugar. That 50-calorie gap is almost entirely sugar: 12g of added sugar is 48 calories.

Flavor plain yogurt yourself and you control the amount. Half a cup of berries, cinnamon, vanilla extract or a teaspoon of honey all add flavor for less sugar than a pre-sweetened cup.

Calcium & vitamin D

Winner: Regular yogurt

Credit where it is due. Regular yogurt keeps more of the minerals that leave with the whey. Dannon plain low-fat lists 270mg of calcium and 3mcg of vitamin D per serving. Fage Total 0% lists 200mg of calcium and no vitamin D.

If yogurt is one of your main calcium sources, that gap is worth knowing. You can close it by eating both, or by pairing Greek yogurt with other calcium-rich foods across the day.

How to eat yogurt for weight loss

Portions, toppings & bowls

A good yogurt can still turn into a dessert bowl. These four rules keep it a high-protein snack or breakfast.

Is yogurt & granola good for weight loss

Measure the granola

It can be, if you measure the granola. Nature Valley's Oats & Honey Protein Granola lists a 2/3-cup serving at 280 calories with 15g of added sugar and 13g of protein. That's about three times the calories of the yogurt underneath it.

A quarter cup, a little over a third of that serving, is about 105 calories and 6g of added sugar. On top of 170g of Fage Total 0%, that's roughly 195 calories and 23g of protein: a real breakfast with some crunch. Pour a full label serving instead and the same bowl is 370 calories, three quarters of it from the granola.

How much yogurt to eat

One cup is plenty

One 3/4-cup to 1-cup serving a day is a practical amount for most people, as a breakfast base or an afternoon snack. There's no special benefit to eating more. The value is in what it replaces. Swapping a pastry or a sweetened coffee drink for plain Greek yogurt is where the calorie savings come from.

Three high-protein yogurt bowls

Sweet, nutty or savory

  • Berry crunch: a cup of plain Greek yogurt, half a cup of mixed berries and two tablespoons of granola.
  • Peanut butter banana: plain Greek yogurt with a tablespoon of peanut butter and half a sliced banana. Powdered peanut butter is the lighter swap if you want the flavor for fewer calories.
  • Savory: plain Greek yogurt with diced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, a teaspoon of olive oil, dill and lemon. It works as a lunch side or a dip.

When yogurt isn't enough

A snack is not lunch

A yogurt cup is a good snack, but it isn't lunch. If your midday meal is the part that keeps slipping, that's an execution problem, not a knowledge problem. Our High Protein Meal Plan has chef-cooked meals ready to heat in a few minutes, with 2 extra ounces of meat per meal, and you can check the macros for every meal on our Nutrition Info page. Our complete meal prep guide covers doing it yourself.

For mornings with no time to build a bowl, our High Protein Overnight Oats come in a resealable pouch: add milk, chill overnight, and eat. Each pouch has 20g of protein and 270 to 330 calories, depending on the flavor, as listed on the product page.

Who should choose Greek or regular yogurt

Pick by your goal

Key takeaways

  • Plain Greek yogurt has about 2.6 times the protein of plain regular yogurt at the same 90 calories per 170g.
  • Plain yogurts have no added sugar. Vanilla low-fat regular yogurt has 12g.
  • Whole-milk Greek yogurt adds 70 calories and still beats every regular yogurt on protein.
  • Regular yogurt lists more calcium and some vitamin D.
  • A quarter cup of granola keeps a yogurt bowl near 200 calories. A full serving nearly doubles it.

So, which yogurt is better for weight loss? For most people, plain Greek, because protein is what makes a snack hold you. Regular yogurt isn't a bad food. It's a lighter, pourable option with more calcium, and it works well in smoothies and sauces.

There is no wrong plain yogurt here, only a better fit for your goal and your taste. Go with the list that matches more of your week.

Choose plain Greek yogurt if
  • You want the most protein for the fewest calories
  • You need a snack that holds you until dinner
  • You like a thick texture for bowls and dips
Choose plain regular yogurt if
  • You want more calcium and some vitamin D from your yogurt
  • You prefer a thinner yogurt for smoothies or overnight oats
  • You find Greek yogurt too tangy and would otherwise skip it

Yogurt for weight loss bottom line

Plain, measured, Greek

Is yogurt good for weight loss? Yes, when it's plain and it replaces a lower-protein food. Plain Greek yogurt gives you the most protein for its calories, about half the sugar of regular yogurt and a snack that holds you longer. Regular yogurt brings more calcium. Flavored yogurt and heavy granola pours are where the calories hide.

Keep it simple: a 170g serving of plain Greek yogurt, fruit or a measured spoon of granola on top, and a real lunch on the days a snack won't cover it.

Yogurt & weight loss FAQ

Your questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most. This article is general information, not medical advice. Talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian for guidance that fits you.

Is yogurt good for weight loss?

Yes, especially plain Greek yogurt. A 170g serving of Fage Total 0% plain has 90 calories and 18g of protein, and protein helps you stay full. In a small 2013 study, a high-protein Greek yogurt snack delayed dinner by almost an hour compared with no snack. Flavored yogurts add sugar, so plain is the better pick.

Is Greek yogurt or regular yogurt better for weight loss?

Greek yogurt. Per 170g, Fage Total 0% plain Greek has 18g of protein and 90 calories, while Dannon plain low-fat regular yogurt has 7g of protein and the same 90 calories. Greek yogurt also has about half the sugar. Regular yogurt lists more calcium and some vitamin D.

Is Greek yogurt & granola good for weight loss?

Yes, with a measured scoop. A quarter cup of protein granola adds about 105 calories. A full 2/3-cup label serving of Nature Valley Oats & Honey Protein Granola is 280 calories with 15g of added sugar, which makes a 170g Greek yogurt bowl about 370 calories instead of 195.

How much Greek yogurt should I eat a day to lose weight?

One 3/4-cup to 1-cup serving a day is a practical amount, as a breakfast base or a snack. More isn't better on its own. The benefit comes from replacing a higher-calorie, lower-protein food, such as a pastry or a sweetened coffee drink, with plain Greek yogurt.

Is vanilla Greek yogurt good for weight loss?

It can fit, but check the added sugar. Flavored yogurts often add 10g or more per serving. Dannon's vanilla low-fat regular yogurt has 12g, and the same yogurt plain has none. Plain Greek yogurt with fruit or vanilla extract gives you the flavor without it.
