Do the arithmetic once. Say maintenance is 2,200. Subtract 400 for an average of 1,800 per day, which is 12,600 for the week. On a three-low, four-high split, that might be low days at 1,600 and high days at 1,950. Weekly total lands at 12,600 either way.

The authors themselves close by noting that longer and larger studies are needed — and the between-group differences on the hunger scales were not statistically significant, so read this as encouraging rather than settled.

And the counterweight: a one-year randomized trial by Sundfør and colleagues comparing intermittent with continuous energy restriction found similar weight-loss outcomes between groups over twelve months.

Put together, the honest read is this: calorie cycling works, and it works because of the weekly deficit. Where it genuinely beats a flat target is adherence — hunger, flexibility, and whether you are still doing it in March. That is not a small thing. It is just not a metabolic trick.

Is it for you?

The case for it comes down to psychology more than physiology. Knowing a higher day is two sleeps away makes a low day easier to sit through, and that alone prevents a lot of all-or-nothing collapses. It handles real life better than a flat target — birthdays, dinners out, holidays — because you can move a high day rather than write off the week. And pairing bigger intake with harder sessions genuinely does protect training quality during a fat-loss phase, which protects muscle.

The case against is equally practical. It requires tracking, and tracking every day for months wears thin. Popular versions of this diet float low days around 1,200 calories, which is an arbitrary number that ignores your size, sex, and activity, and is too low for a lot of people. The approach also says nothing whatsoever about food quality — you can calorie-cycle your way through a week of nutritionally empty food and hit every target.

The clearest reason to skip it: if daily tracking and deliberate under-eating on scheduled days sounds like something that would occupy more of your attention than it should, a flat daily deficit produces the same result with less machinery.
